Frugal Tips For Saving Cash One of the biggest household expenses is likely to be your heating bill- keeping your home cosy and warm definitely doesn’t come cheap. Short of spending the winter feeling chilly you might wonder what you can do do. Thankfully there are some frugal ways to keep your heating bill down, while keeping your house warm. source Turn Off Radiators That You Don’t Need Switching off radiators in unused rooms can save you cash on your heating bill. Rather than blasting the heating through the whole house, stick to the important rooms. For example you won’t need to heat up a guest bedroom if no-one is currently using it, and you might not even need to heat up your kitchen as the warmth from appliances like the oven and tumble dryer can keep it toasty enough. Stick to heating the bedrooms, living space and bathrooms- shut the doors to any rooms that you’re not planning on heating to keep everywhere else warm. Insulate Your Home Having loft and cavity wall insulation fitted is one effective way to save you money on your heating bills. Up to twenty five percent of heat can be lost through the roof in uninsulated homes. Spending the money on the upfront costs will save you on your bills in the long run, not only will you be able to heat your home more effectively but you reduce your carbon footprint too as less energy is being wasted. Evaluate Your Windows Heat can obviously escape from old and draughty windows, but did you know you could even be losing it through your double glazing? Check all of the seals to make sure you’re not getting any draughts coming through, and to go a step further you could even have energy efficient windows installed in your home. If you’re looking to have new windows fitted anyway then these are well worth considering, as again you’ll save money on your gas bill for years to come. Switch to a Solar Hot Water System Solar hot water heating produces a clean, inexhaustible supply of energy. Again you’ll reduce your carbon footprint, as it provides energy without the need to burn fossil fuels. Installing a hot water heater system saves you money in the long term, you’ll notice a dramatic decrease in your electricity bill due to this energy saving hot water heating method. You can heat your home without Put Your Heating on a Timer It’s so tempting in the winter months to just stick on the heating whenever you feel a bit chilly and leave it on right up until you get into bed. But having some kind of schedule is much more beneficial. It stops it from getting left on all day. With a timed schedule you can make sure the house is warm for the times that you need it. Setting it to come on for half an hour in the morning just before you’re due to get up will make sure it’s nice and warm while you’re getting ready without the risk of accidentally leaving it on all day. If it gets left on by mistake you end up paying a fortune and wasting energy for no reason. There’s a myth that it’s cheaper to keep your heating on all day on low rather than turn it off and on as you need it. However that’s all it is- a myth. If you do this, you’ll most definitely spend more on your heating. Have it on for a few hours in the evening rather than the whole way through, and keep doors shut to hold in the heat. Wearing cosy pyjamas and sitting underneath throws on the sofa will keep you warm if the temperature starts to drop. Especially if the baby is on the way, there are lots of things to work on; starting with the nursery, you will have to baby-proof your entire home. Start with one thing at a time, and work your way throughout the home. If you are left without any ideas, you can always look online for some extra work. Here are some of the things you might have missed that have to be done. Control the temperature Most of your house should be well-lighted, and enough sun light should come into your home. But, during the summer heat, you have to protect your home from sun’s exposure. Children and babies function in the same way as adults, but need extra protection. Overheating is a potential problem, and if the room temperature is above normal, your infant is exposed to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). A study has shown that by placing a ceiling fan, you reduce the risk of SIDS by 72%. Dress your windows and reduce the amount of heat generated within your house. Heavy blinds or double-glazed windows are both a great option. Improve the air quality Having many windows in your house means you can refresh the air within it. If not done several times during the day, the air becomes stale and starts smelling. Consider getting Oransi air purifiers, especially if you have problems with local sewer and smells within your home. Make sure your house walls and floor are dry. If you have problems with moist, call a home repair center and let the professionals take care of it. Your job is to ensure your house has enough fresh and quality air. Wooden furniture Most furniture pieces are made of plywood, pressed wood and chipboard. These materials are compressed together and glued into boards. After a while sitting on furniture made out of these, they tend to emit toxic gas, such as formaldehyde, an indoor air pollutant found within the glues. Formaldehyde is responsible for many infant diseases, such as asthma and other respiratory tract diseases. Solid wood furniture is easily recognized by its water-based finishes. So the next time you go shopping for furniture, stay on the lookout for solid wood. Toys can be toxic Most of your children and especially babies tend to play with their toys. As you may already know, babies love putting toys in their mouth. This makes most toys a source of common toxic exposure. Phthalates, which can be found in soft vinyl toys, lead in paints and plastics are very hazardous. Also, toys with batteries can be hazardous, especially if your child takes out the battery. The most efficient way of preserving your child’s health is by replacing all plastic toys with plush or wooden ones. Keep the electronics away Even though we live in the 21st century, you can still protect your children from radioactivity produced from electronic devices. One way of doing it is by removing all electronic devices from your child’s room. If you have a baby, nursery should be electronics-free at all time. This goes for TVs, PCs, iPods and smartphones, and any other device that produces radioactive waves. Since your children spend most of their time in their rooms, replacing electronics and gadgets with toys is a smart choice. At least until they are old enough and there is nothing you can do to stop them. Creating a healthy environment for your child to grow in is essential for its health and proper development. Do everything you can, and invest your time and resources into creating a nontoxic environment. It will be as healthy for you as it will be for them. And it's gross to think just how much dirt it builds up over time. Not only dust mites and other critters lurk in our bed, but also foul stains such as sweat, urine, blood and more. Hence, regular check and cleaning is necessary. Although this process might be time consuming and hard for some, you don't need to call for a professional cleaning service all the time. It's always handy to have some knowledge on how we can clean our mattresses. The basic and the simplest methods can make a huge difference. There are surprisingly very easy steps you can do on your own to maintain your mattresses clean. General Cleaning Routine Always make mattress cleaning a routine. Do it every quarter of the year, basically whenever season change. Here's a simple 5 step guide you can follow. 1. Before you start, remove the entire bedding first and launder them. Wash and dry thoroughly your mattress pad and duvet. 2. Move your mattress away from walls and furniture. Move the bed in a position that is accessible to all sides. 3. Vacuum the bed thoroughly. Start from the top of your bed going your way down. Then vacuum the sides the same way. 4. We might not recognize any smell, but overtime body sweat builds up and will potentially emit foul odor. So it's best to prevent before the problem arise. Deodorize the mattress by sprinkling a layer of baking soda all over. Rub it well with a brush and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes. Tip: You can add essentials oils like lavender or peppermint to add fragrance and aroma. Simply mix it with the baking soda. 5. Vacuum again. The baking soda you sprinkled absorbs the odor and moisture in the bed. Vacuuming it the second time pulls out the moisture along with other substances that cause odor. Remove Mattress Stains Mattresses typically get stains every now and then especially if you don't use a mattress pad. For stubborn stains like urine, sweat and vomit that can't be removed solely by your usual cleaning routine. You might need to add a little more effort in removing them. Consider trying this easy stain removal solution. 1. Spray the stain with white vinegar and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. 2. Cover the vinegar spot by sprinkling baking soda. Leave it on until the spot dries. 3. Vacuum the baking soda. 4. If there are stains remaining, make water and borax paste and rub it in the spot until the stain disappears. Let it dry and vacuum. 5. If there are still stain remaining, dampen an unused cloth with hydrogen peroxide and rub in the spot in a circular motion. If these methods don't work, consider contacting a professional mattress cleaning service to remedy the stain. You may also consider contacting your mattress retailer to consult on your mattress as it might have specific designs and features that you need to know for you to find a better solution to your stain and other mattress related problems. Additional Tips ? Open your windows from time to time, to let the air out. ? Replace your blanket and pillows every week. ? Flip and rotate your mattress every six months. ? It's best to use a mattress pad to protect your mattress from stains. ? Always clean a stain as quickly as possible. Stains are hard to remove when they dry out. Cleaning your mattress can be a hassle. But it's always better to take a regular cleaning schedule rather than cleaning your mattress only when it's too late. Take these tips and these should help you maintain the condition of your mattress. If done regularly, you won't need to think about possible dust mites and bed bugs. You can have a deep sleep with your clean bed! It's kind of ironic, really, because we spend so much time as children wishing we were older, taller and had more freedom. Once we are older, with the wealth of knowledge and experience we have now, we wish we could communicate a little of that to our child self. In truth, kids have a lot of reasons to want to get older. The fact is that as children, we lack the ability to see that with age comes responsibility. If we had to run a home or find a job at that age, we'd be horrified. But as adults, we seem to forget a lot of what wasn't fun about being a child. And even with our own kids, we can be guilty of lying to them and to ourselves about our own childhood. We will tell them things like "At your age I would have been grateful to have..." or "When I was your age, I respected my elders!". And maybe sometimes this is true, but it is also a very distilled version of the truth. We shouldn't forget the things we hated as kids. "He's Such A Fussy Eater!" Flickr Many parents are driven to distraction by trying to get their kids to eat what is put in front of them. As grown-ups, we strive to eat a balanced, healthy diet. But we have the advantage of knowing that some foods - which we may not enjoy - are good for us. We also have the benefit of knowing that some things that look unappetising actually taste good. As a kid, that lack of knowledge can make the unfamiliar worrying. You need to be patient with a kid. "Bedtime Is A War Zone" PublicDomainPictures As an adult, bedtime is something we come to cherish. A long day of work and life's stresses can be pushed away and we can sleep. But your kids can be less keen to drift off. Territorial battles over beds can develop. In bunk beds, someone has to have the top bunk. One way of avoiding these battles is to create separation so everyone has their own space, with specific designs like Cuckooland's collection of triple bunk beds for kids and rotate who sleeps where. "They Never Want To Do Their Homework" Show My Homework Think back to when you were a kid. You spent all day at school, doing work that you mostly didn't want to do. You get home, you get changed and eat dinner, and then you have to do more work that you don't want to do. If your boss came around to your house at 8pm and dropped off a pile of files, or asked you to plumb in a toilet, would you like it much? Of course, homework is important. But your kid is not unique in not wanting to do it. It's the least fun thing ever. Being a child is actually difficult in ways we seem to forget almost as soon as we turn 18. It helps to remember that when, as a parent, we get frustrated with our kids for just being kids.
